Westmeath man donates found money to guide and special assistance dogs
In a heartwarming Facebook post by An Garda Síochána Westmeath, the division highlighted the story of a local man who has donated money to assistance dogs.
The story began on September 20, 2024, when a Westmeath man was driving along the road with his dog and saw a sum of cash blowing in the wind.
He then proceeded to collect as much of the cash as possible and put it in his car, bringing it to Mullingar Garda Station. This was a large sum of cash, with Westmeath Gardai saying it was in the thousands.
Officers at Mullingar Garda Station made considerable efforts to locate the owner of the money, but nobody came forward to claim it.
As the 366 days passed, the man was contacted to collect his money. However, when the Gardaí asked about his plans for the money, he said he was going to donate the entire amount to Guide Dogs for the Blind and assist animals.
In their post, An Garda Síochána Westmeath said: “Last week the gentleman came to collect his money, which was in the thousands, asked if he had any nice plans for the windfall, he said the whole amount would be donated to Guide Dogs for the Blind and Special Assistance Dogs.
“He said the reason why he is donating all of it, but to keep his anonymity, the reason will not be divulged, but to say it is lovely is an understatement.
“Thank you for being such an honest gentleman; it pays to be such. An Garda Siochana would have liked to name the gentleman, but promised not to.”
