TUS heralded for key role in Ireland’s first all-island apprenticeship programme

Students of the new Accounting Technologist Apprenticeship Degree programme at the induction day on the Athlone campus.Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) has been heralded for its key role in Ireland’s first all-island apprenticeship programme. Developed with Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI) in partnership with TUS and The Open University in Northern Ireland, the new apprenticeship marks a transformative step in how Ireland develops talent for the future.
It was officially launched by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Simon Harris, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless, TD, Minister for the Economy in Northern Ireland Dr Caoimhe Archibald, and Minister of State Marian Harkin, at Iveagh House.
Recognising the importance of data analytics and artificial intelligence in accounting, the apprenticeship defines a new role, the accounting technologist, to bridge the gap between financial expertise and digital transformation.
Graduates will achieve a BSc (Hons) in Accounting Technology, validated as Level 8 by TUS and Level 6 by The Open University (UK).
The first intake of 24 apprentices was in September, following an induction event on September 6 at the Athlone Campus. The apprenticeship blends academic learning with industry practice, combining classroom teaching, employer mentorship, and digital learning. The programme focuses on developing high-value skills in data analytics, cybersecurity, information systems management and AI-driven decision-making.

The Accounting Technologist Apprenticeship reflects that, combining academic excellence with real-world experience to prepare graduates who are ready to lead in a changing profession.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said: “The launch of the new all-island Accounting Technologist Apprenticeship is a landmark in our shared approach to skills, opportunity and economic development. It reflects our commitment to working together across this island to prepare people for the future economy, and to ensure that talent and innovation can thrive in every community. This apprenticeship is a strong example of what we can achieve through practical cooperation and shared ambition.”
Minister for the Economy in Northern Ireland, Dr Caoimhe Archibald, added: “I am committed to expanding apprenticeship opportunities across the island, fostering cross-border collaboration and shared growth. The new apprenticeship is a major step forward. It enhances our curriculum and prepares learners for the evolving demands of the accounting profession.
“This programme directly addresses the rise of artificial intelligence and the growing need for sustainability reporting, skills now essential for modern accounting professionals.
“Government departments and organisations are now required to include environmental, social, and governance disclosures in their annual reports, promoting transparency and accountability.”
Gillian Doherty, COO of Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI), added: “Business environments are changing at an unprecedented pace due to technological innovation, sustainability imperatives, and evolving regulatory frameworks. This apprenticeship is particularly relevant for organisations focused on ESG implementation, digital transformation initiatives, and data-driven decision-making. It creates sustainable finance careers by developing essential capabilities in AI, data analytics, ESG reporting, cybersecurity, and digital transformation, competencies in demand but absent from traditional qualifications.”
