New Bus Priority Lane for M4

Peter Burke welcomes the new Bus Priority Lane

Longford-Westmeath TD Peter Burke has welcomed news that the M4 Bus Priority Lane between Maynooth and Leixlip is expected to open early next year.

Burke was making representations to the Minister for Transport and TFI to progress works as soon as possible, as the delays faced by both drivers and bus passengers on this route.

Minister Burke said: “Many people in Mullingar and the surrounding areas have contacted me in recent months about how long it is taking to reach Dublin in the mornings; in some cases, this can be over two hours to get into the City Centre.”

“This is a serious quality of life issue for workers and families, who are spending far too much time in traffic every day.

“I have been pushing hard for the Bus Priority Lane to be delivered without delay, and I welcome progress that has now been confirmed.”

In response to Burke, TFI Chief Executive Lorcan O’Connor said: “Intelligent transport system works remain, and there are legislative changes progressing to allow for the opening of the Bus Priority Lane.

“TII is liaising with the Department of Transport on this matter. It is currently anticipated that the opening of the Bus Priority Lane will be in Q1 of 2026.”

Peter Burke concluded: “When this lane opens, it will mean shorter, more predictable commutes for bus passengers and greater confidence in public transport as a real alternative to driving.”
