Public consultation emerging preferred route corridor for N52 Cavestown to Kilrush
Westmeath County Council invite feedback on the emerging preferred route corridor for the Cavestown to Kilrush Scheme on the N52. Y
In a statement this morning, the local authority said: “Your views are important to us and will help to inform the preliminary design for the scheme.
Westmeath County Council have appointed engineering consultants AtkinsRéalis to progress phase two of the scheme – the options selection process.
Having identified three possible route options for the scheme in the summer of 2025, AtkinsRéalis undertook a more detailed assessment of each option to determine the emerging preferred route corridor.
The assessment included a multi-criteria analysis (MCA) based on a comprehensive set of criteria including economic, social, environmental, and planning factors.
Consideration was also given to feedback received during the public consultation on the route options in July 2025.
The outcome of the MCA shows that ‘option five blue’ offers a balanced set of benefits across the relevant criteria.
It meets the scheme objectives to enhance road safety, reduce the risk of collisions, improve journey times, and improve air quality and noise levels for nearby residents.

Hard copy feedback forms will also be available at the public consultation event in Clonmellon Community Centre today Wednesday December 3 from 3pm to 8pm.
Please ensure all feedback is submitted, in hardcopy or digitally, no later than January 14, 2026.
