Details of memorial mass for late Pat Cooney

Details of a memorial mass for the late Pat Cooney have been announced.

Mr Cooney, Griffith Street, Athlone, died peacefully, after a short illness, with family at the Hermitage Clinic on December 6.

The deceased was a former Cabinet Minister, TD, MEP and Senator, and a hugely significant figure in the political, commercial and social life of Athlone and the Longford/Westmeath constituency for decades.

He was pre-deceased by his wife Bridie (nee McMenamin), and his passing is deeply regretted by his sons Mark, Michael & Edward; daughter Catherine; grandchildren Eva, Gemma, Carla, Alice and Bridget; son-in-law Kilian Plunkett, daughters-in-law Anne and Stefana, sisters Agnes Cooney and Gemma Rowley; pre-deceased by sisters Mary Cooney and Christine Cooney, and brothers John, Garrett, and Fintan. Greatly missed by his brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, many friends and kind neighbours.

His death notice states that, in accordance with his wishes, his body has been donated to Medical Science.

An opportunity to express condolences to the family will be available at Flynn's Funeral Home, The Strand, Athlone (N37 WY17) on Wednesday, December 10, from 4pm to 7pm.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Athlone (N37 XP66) on Thursday, December 11, at 10:30am.
