Purrfect approach to helping pets
The three local ladies have set up a new animal welfare community group, Paw Patrol Westmeath, in Mullingar to rescue abandoned and homeless cats and dogs.
Mary Gavin, Carmel Foran and Maeve O’Donoghue have come together to look after the welfare of abandoned and homeless cats and dogs in the area. Their main goals are to offer help to owners who need to rehome their dogs or cats. They are hoping to “help transport dogs from the pound to rescue places when needed”, and they will advertise lost and found pets on their Facebook page.
Maeve is from Killucan and has spent 11 years helping rehome and rescue dogs from the pound in Mullingar. “And I loved every minute of it,” she told the Westmeath Examiner.
She said that the group has received a lot of support locally, particularly from Park Vets in Mullingar “who are very supportive and good to us”.
Mary is from Dalystown, Mullingar, and owns Midland Pet Sitting, a daycare facility in which they mind pets while their owners are at work or on a break. They offer plenty of exercise and free runs on a two-acre, fully-fenced dog park in a home from home environment. Mary has always been involved in helping local animals in need and is excited about this new initiative.
Carmel is native of Mullingar and is co-owner of Hair Mechanics on Mount Street. She has been deeply involved in trapping, neutering and returning (TNR) feral cats in the community. She and two other local women, Marie Broder and Bernie Gunning, are out in all weather, making sure feral cats get fed every day.
Paw Patrol will continue to TNR feral cats living locally.
In addition, on occasions, they have helped owners trap their own lost dogs that have proven difficult to catch.
Now that they are up and running, Paw Patrol will be looking for local people to foster homeless pets for them. So, if anyone would like to help, please contact the ladies through their Facebook page.
Donations are always welcome and can be made through Revolut @cforan70 or via PayPal @ forthepounddogs@gmail.com. Hopefully, with support from the local community, this group will continue to help the abandoned and homeless local cats and dogs.
