Calls for bins along canal as anglers dump sweetcorn tins
Empty sweetcorn tins, left by anglers who use the kernels as bait, are being dumped alongside the canal in Mullingar, Cllr Aoife Davitt told officials at a meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad as she called for the provision of bins along the canal from the pedestrian lights at the Newbrook nursing home along the paths into town.
"The dog bins, especially the one at the nursing home, is actually full most of the time,” Cllr Davitt said, before going on to lodge her complaint about the sweetcorn tins.
By way of response, the district stated it will cost the provision and maintenance of bins along the canal cycle and walking way.
Trees
Cllr Davitt also raised two queries pertaining to Lakepoint, one relating to the need to top the trees at The Close, and the second on the issue of when speed ramps will be installed on the main road of the Lakepoint estate.
On the ramps question, the district responded that it is district is currently completing surfacing of roads as part of the 2025 works programme.
“Once completed the surfacing contractor will complete all agreed ramps in December 2025,” the reply concluded.
Addressing her concerns over the trees, the executive’s response was that the district has recently removed identified rotten trees in Lakepoint. “All the trees will be examined to determine what works is necessary,” she was assured.
District engineer, Pat Kavanagh, said that there has been an arborist examining trees for the district, and there was a very large tree at Lakepoint that was split down the middle.
