Cllr Aoife Davitt wants traffic calming, paths, and road repairs at several places, including at St Finian’s College.

Traffic and road works updates sought by Councillor Davitt

At the December meeting of the Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District, Cllr Aoife Davitt raised several local infrastructure issues, seeking updates on traffic calming, pathway development, and road repairs across the district, and also at St Finian’s College.

Cllr Davitt asked for an update on the ongoing speed-calming initiatives in Taughmon. In response, council officials confirmed that road markings, signage, and electronic vehicle actuation signs have already been installed in the area.

Additional traffic-calming measures are currently being designed by the Transportation Section and are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026.

The councillor also sought support for a proposed Community Involvement Scheme (CIS) application for a new footpath in The Downs. The Transportation Section reported that a review of all current CIS applications is under way, and all submissions are to be considered for inclusion in the 2026–2027 works programme.

“Following completion of the review, a priority list of applications will be prepared and submitted to the Department of Transport,” Cllr Davitt was assured.

Cllr Davitt further requested that the council urgently repair the road at Great Down, The Downs. Officials confirmed that resurfacing works have recently been completed on the bog road in the area and that additional repair works will follow.

St Finian’s road safety

Raising concern about a safety issue near St Finian’s College, Cllr Davitt asked that the district include the L5704 in the safety works happening at St Finian’s College and reduce the speed limit to 50kmh.

To that, the formal written answer stated that the district will liaise with the Transportation Section to examine the possibility to reduce the speed limit along that road as part of the speed limits review.
