Garda investigate Ballynacargy Church robbery

The community in Ballynacargy were shocked last week when raiders damaged the home heating oil tank at Ballynacargy Church and made off with the contents. Fr Tony Gonoude explained to the congregation on Friday at a funeral Mass that the church had been the victim of the criminal act.

The matter is the subject of a garda investigation. “The thieves took around 600 litres of oil from Ballynacargy Church,” Fr Gonoude wrote on Facebook. “This left the Church cold for a funeral and the heating system in need of repair. Thanks to those who have been of such help and An Garda for their help. A camera has been installed.”

The parish priest later gave an update for parishioners: “Thank you for the kind words and to all those who are helping to repair our oil tank and heating system for Ballynacargy Church. New security measures are in place too.”

Fr Gonoude told the Westmeath Examiner he was overwhelmed by the support he received from the congregation after the robbery.

He commended the gardaí for their support and the tradesmen who promptly repaired the damaged heating system.
