Mullingar Toastmasters: the night truth stayed home

Short stories about tall tales ruled the evening at the last meeting of Mullingar Toastmasters in the Greville Arms Hotel. Members of the Inklings Creative Writing Group joined in and further elevated the imaginative storytelling on the night, when funerals competed with football, a short stay rental with long queues and suspiciously flexible morals, a vanishing uncle with unfinished business, a mysterious origin story, and one tale that ran ferociously downhill without brakes.

Reality refused to behave as fiction took to the stage with each speech.

While factual narratives were optional, the commitment of each speaker was not. Skill development in the areas of presence, clarity, and control also stepped on stage in a big way – and that’s what’s at the heart of Toastmasters.

Members show up, the group shows up to support, and everyone leaves with a bit more confidence than when they arrived. Progress happens in small steps. Tall tales simply make those steps louder, bolder, and perhaps easier to take in front of an audience.

A night is always better with friends and Mullingar Toastmasters offer a hearty thank-you to the members of Inklings Creative Writing Group.

The next meting of Mullingar Toastmasters is on Thursday February 12 at 8pm in the Greville Arms. Guests and members are always and equally welcome to attend.
