Forestry advisory clinic to take place in Westmeath

Liam Kelly, Teagasc

The Teagasc Forestry Development Department has announced 33 locations for the upcoming nationwide series of one-to-one forestry clinics giving attendees an opportunity to take an independent look at how forestry can add to farm income, sustainability and labour efficiency.

These one-to-one consultations are being held in every county, between February 9 and 26. The clinics provide an excellent opportunity for a consultation with an experienced forestry advisor and can be arranged by appointment. The Westmeath forestry clinic is in the Teagasc Mullingar office (N91 PK10) on Monday 9 February. Consultations will be by appointment only and should be booked in advance by contacting the Mullingar office on 044 9340721.

The current Forestry Programme 2023-2027 offers landowners attractive opportunities in relation to forest creation and a wide range of planting options is available. Options include small areas of native woodland, agroforestry (combining trees and livestock), and forests grown primarily to produce timber; all of which also provide many other benefits.

A consultation with your Teagasc forestry advisor allows time to consider how growing trees might fit in with your overall farming objectives and how they can contribute to improving income, labour efficiencies and farm sustainability.

Forest owners are also welcome to attend these clinics to discuss their forest and ongoing management, including supports for existing forests.

Teagasc forestry advisors provide independent and objective advice, empowering landowners to make informed decisions on many relevant issues including:

• Options under the Forestry Programme 2023-2027

• Available grants and premiums

• Interaction with other farm schemes, e.g. BISS, ACRES, organics

• How forestry can improve farm income and the environment

• How to apply and get the job done right first time

The emphasis for the clinic is on new planting, but existing forest owners are also welcome to engage.

Booking is essential. Contact the Teagasc Advisory office in Mullingar on 044 9340721 to book your appointment. Please bring maps and other relevant information on the day to optimise the advisory experience and outcome.

This clinic will provide an ideal opportunity to get answers to your forestry questions – don’t miss it.
