Westmeath allocated €11m in National Roads funding

An allocation of €11 million has been secured for Westmeath’s National Roads in 2026.

The funds are set to benefit over 10 projects throughout the county, including €6 million for the N4 Mullingar to Longford upgrade.

Other projects to benefit from improvement works include the N55 Glasson to Lissoy (€1.5m), N52 Cavestown to Kilrush (€400k), N55 Ballykeeran Bypass (€300k), and €2.7m towards other minor projects and maintenance works across Westmeath.

Minister of State Robert Troy is pleased by the allocation.

"This is Critically important," he explains, "One to give certainty to the landowners either side of the road.

"This has caused huge uncertainty over a prolonged period of time and effectively sterilising landowner's property.

"Two, this is an extremely busy road and as a consequence of that the investment, the road upgrade will greatly improve safety on the road.

"Finally, in terms of connectivity we have a motorway to Mullingar but when you head further you're down to a single lane carriageway.

"That is a disincentive to people who are looking to invest in the Midlands, the West and the Northwest.

"A new road there would greatly enhance connectivity and balance regional development something that is a key consideration for government."

Also welcoming today’s allocation, Minister Burke said, “I’m delighted that Westmeath has secured almost €11 million in 2026 National Roads funding,” he said.

“This is a clear vote of confidence in our county and its future. Investing in our roads isn’t just about infrastructure - it’s about connecting communities, supporting jobs, and strengthening local enterprise right across the Midlands.

“The N4 Mullingar to Longford route is one of our most important strategic corridors, linking the Midlands to Dublin and the northwest. It carries significant daily traffic and plays a vital role in supporting commuters, businesses and freight. Continued investment in the N4 is essential to improve safety, reduce congestion and future-proof this key national route.

“This significant allocation shows the Government’s ongoing commitment to balanced regional development. Strong transport links are critical to attracting investment, supporting tourism and ensuring that counties like Westmeath continue to grow and thrive.

“I will continue to work to ensure that Westmeath receives the infrastructure investment it deserves, so that our communities and businesses can continue to prosper.”
