€3.5 million investment for Westmeath under 2026 HSE Capital Plan
The HSE is to invest €3,497,110 for Westmeath under their 2026 Building and Equipment Capital Plan. The funding forms part of a wider €1.3 billion national allocation to develop and modernise healthcare infrastructure.
The local investment will support a range of hospital and community projects across Mullingar and Athlone, strengthening local services and expanding capacity.
Speaking on the announcement the Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke, said the funds will improve patient care: “The investments set out in the 2026 HSE Capital Plan demonstrate a strong commitment to improving Westmeath’s health facilities and ensuring better access to care for patients.
“As our population continues to grow and people live longer, investing in modern healthcare infrastructure is essential.”
Minister Burke said the investment will have a significant impact: “This funding will deliver real improvements on the ground, supporting frontline services and enhancing facilities for patients, families and staff across the county.”
Key projects for Westmeath under the 2026 Plan include:
€1 million for Mullingar Resource Centre.
€1.12 million for the Primary Care Unit at St. Loman’s Campus, Mullingar.
Investment in emergency department expansion, ward accommodation and infrastructure upgrades at Regional Hospital Mullingar.
Funding for a new ambulance base and injury unit facilities in Athlone.
Continued development of mental health facilities, including a new residential unit at St. Vincent’s Hospital Athlone.
Investment in office accommodation to support healthcare administration in Regional Hospital Mullingar (RHM).
Minister Burke said the projects bring healthcare services closer to home and meet the needs of communities throughout Westmeath: “By increasing capacity and modernising facilities, we are ensuring patients can access high quality care when and where they need it,” he concluded.
Minister for State at the Department of Finance, Robert Troy, said the funding targets key areas of healthcare in the county: “This is really positive and welcome news. The HSE has given a commitment to implement a number of improvements across Westmeath that will enhance frontline services and improve the experience for staff, the patients, and their families.”
