Gerry's leadership qualities were evident in Killucan
It is with profound sadness that the passing of Gerry Quinn Snr, Joristown, Killucan, Co Westmeath, is marked following his death on February 19. Gerry passed away peacefully at home, following an illness bravely borne, surrounded by his loving family.
A lifelong and devoted servant of Killucan GAA Club, Gerry was a towering figure within the club and wider community for more than five decades. From the early 1970s onwards, he became a cornerstone of the club, dedicating his time, energy and passion to its growth and success. During his playing days he lined out as a forward, proudly wearing the Killucan colours and laying the foundations for what would become a lifetime of involvement.
Gerry’s influence extended far beyond his playing career. He went on to coach Killucan teams to county championship success at Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 level, nurturing young talent and instilling pride and belief in generations of players. In 2000, he served as a selector when Killucan captured the junior championship, a moment of immense pride for both Gerry and the club.
His leadership qualities were evident when he served as club chairman in 1998 and 1999, guiding the club with wisdom, fairness and steady commitment. He was also a founding member of the club lotto, a crucial fundraiser that has played a vital role in supporting club development over the years. Remarkably, Gerry remained an active member of both the lotto committee and the club committee right up until his passing which is a testament to his unwavering dedication.
Gerry’s contribution to Killucan GAA was matched only by his devotion to his family. Predeceased by his parents Michael and Annie, his sisters Josephine, Lucy (Battle), Mary (Preston) and his brother Willie (The Mighty), he was a dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, brother and treasured friend.
He will be forever loved and sadly missed by his wife and best friend Nuala; his adored children Gerry, Keith, Colin and Sinead; daughters-in-law Caroline and Sharon; son-in-law Mickey; and his cherished granddaughters Leah, Ava, Saibhe, Aoibhinn, Ellie, Annie and Ada. He is also deeply mourned by his brothers Sean and Michael; sisters Margaret (Smyth), Lily (Daly) and Imelda (O’Connor); brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
Those who knew Gerry speak of a remarkable man, genuine to the last, tireless in his efforts and unwavering in his loyalty. He gave his all to his family and to his community, constantly promoting and supporting Killucan GAA Club with pride and passion. His legacy will live on, not only through the many players he mentored and the structures he helped build, but also through his wife and children, who continue to be at the heart of the community.
The large turnout of mourners to pay their respects showed the esteem in which he was held. As a mark of respect to Gerry and his family, Killucan’s senior Division 1 game against Athlone, along with all club activities over the weekend, were postponed.
Gerry Quinn’s passing leaves a deep void in Killucan, but his spirit, commitment and friendship will never be forgotten. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
