More than 100 people turn out for meetings on proposed Cullion history book

Any doubts about whether there was an appetite for the Cullion book were dispelled last weekend, as more than 100 people attended the three information events held at the clubhouse at Cullion Hurling Club.

The events were organised by the steering group to gauge the level of interest, and if they are honest, no one had any idea if anybody would actually turn up. Thankfully the events were well attended and it is clear at this stage that there is a huge interest in the proposal to publish the book.

James Marshall, who was at the Friday evening session, expressed the view that everybody would want to get involved in what he feels is a wonderful idea.

Catherine Stenson recalled some of the things that she and her family had been involved in over the years and said that everybody would be willing to contribute to what will be a historical record for generations to come.

Michelle and Evelyn Faughnan said people have lovely memories about the occasions and Cullion events over the years.

Christy Sharry, who was at the Saturday session, said the production of a Cullion book is long overdue and he applauds any effort to document the memories of the older people in the area in particular.

Mary Monaghan, who attended the Sunday session, said she is delighted to see both young and old people from the area are so enthusiastic about the book project.

John and Paddy Flynn also came along to the Sunday session and are interested in having their parents’ memories recorded in the book.

Anybody who has an interest in becoming involved in the project can do so. People who have an idea they think might be worth mentioning or who have recollections of things that happened in the locality over the years are being encouraged to contact any member of the steering group or to send an email to: CullionBook@gmail.com.

The success of the book will depend on the commitment of those who have any association with the Cullion area.

Families are being invited to submit articles and photos for inclusion in the book by the deadline of April 30.

Christy Martin, who went along on Friday evening, said the production of a book was a great idea and he said others he had discussed the idea with were excited about being involved.

Rosemary Whelehan said it would be lovely to see the history of the local families being documented.

Annie Reynolds said there is a lot of historical information that only exists in the form of personal memories, and unless people’s memories are documented now, that history will be lost forever.

Ideas and suggestions can be discussed with any member of the steering group. Articles and photos can be e-mailed to: CullionBook@gmail.com.
