Westmeath minors secure strong win in testing conditions
Westmeath 2-5, Carlow 0-3
A dominant first-half display proved decisive as Westmeath’s minor camogie team recorded an eight-point victory over Carlow in extremely difficult conditions at Joristown last Sunday.
The hosts built a commanding lead before the break in their third-round championship encounter, leaving the visitors with far too much ground to make up in the second half.
Following a disappointing result against Armagh in the previous round, Westmeath were determined to get their campaign back on track. A superb opening-half performance laid the foundation for victory, while strong teamwork and defensive resilience after the interval ensured their place in next month’s All-Ireland semi-finals.
Playing with a strong breeze at their backs, Westmeath made the perfect start inside the opening minute. Ellen Mulvaney’s free dropped short, but Rachel Molloy reacted quickest to flick the sliotar over the bar and open the scoring for the home side.
Scoring chances were limited during the opening period as both defences stood firm, with Carlow’s Gráinne Grennan posing the main attacking threat for the visitors. However, resolute defending from the Lake County side, along with an assured display from goalkeeper Laura Jane Doyle, kept the scoreboard firmly in Westmeath’s favour.
Westmeath’s hard work was rewarded when Mulvaney added a pointed ‘45 to extend the lead to two.
Shortly afterwards, the game was halted for several minutes following a nasty collision involving Keelin Kavanagh and Carlow wing-back Katelyn Sheppard. Thankfully, neither player suffered serious injury. Kavanagh was able to continue, while Sheppard was replaced as a precaution.
Westmeath finished the half strongly, adding 1-3 before the interval. Mulvaney struck further scores from placed balls, while Róisín Connaughton chipped in with an excellent point from play.
The goal arrived when Connaughton’s effort was saved, but the rebound fell kindly to Rachel Molloy, who reacted sharply to drive the sliotar to the net and open up an eight-point lead at half-time.
The second half proved a more subdued affair as worsening weather conditions made free-flowing camogie difficult. Nevertheless, the physical battle continued and Westmeath’s defence impressed throughout, with Maggie Bartley, Grace Murtagh and Katie Muldoon particularly influential.
Carlow finally opened their account in the 43rd minute when Grennan converted a free, a testament to the stubborn resistance of the Westmeath defence up to that point.
Westmeath responded with another well-worked goal. Keelin Kavanagh delivered a superb pass across goal for substitute Kayla Kennedy, who finished neatly to the net to ensure the hosts maintained a comfortable advantage. Grennan added two further scores for Carlow, one from play and another from a placed ball, but it proved little more than consolation as the final whistle sounded amid driving rain, much to the delight of the rain-soaked players and supporters.
The well-earned victory secures Jim Bob Baker’s side a place in the All-Ireland semi-finals next month as they continue their pursuit of national honours with renewed confidence.
