The future of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) will be discussed at a gathering scheduled to take place at the Mullingar Park Hotel next Thursday. The discussions focus on the post-2027 CAP, addressing potential 20% budget reductions, prioritizing generational renewal, enhancing environmental sustainability, and ensuring flexible, targeted support for farmers amidst upcoming EU budget negotiations
Key aspects of the discussion will see key EU negotiators and Irish stakeholders focusing on shaping the next phase of European farming policy.
Irish representatives are highlighting concerns over a proposed 20% reduction in CAP funding, which could represent a €360 million per year decrease, impacting Irish agriculture, which relies heavily on EU funding.
Next Thursday's discussions centre on ensuring a fully funded CAP that emphasizes environmental sustainability, organic support, and generational renewal, with a focus on simplifying the framework for better implementation.
Organised by MEP Barry Cowen the gathering is an opportunity for stakeholders to engage with policy makers: “I am hosting on the future of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), taking place in the Mullingar Park Hotel this Thursday at 5:30pm sharp.
“This is a final opportunity to attend what will be a significant discussion on the next CAP, bringing together key European Parliament negotiators alongside Ministers, TDs and Senators.
The panel discussion will feature: Norbert Lins (EPP Lead Negotiator on the next CAP), Tadhg Buckley (IFA Chief Economist), and Barry Cowen MEP (Renew Europe Negotiator). Audience Q&A will follow the addresses.
Attendees will require registration, details of which are on MEP Barry Cowen's Facebook and Instagram pages.
MEP Maria Walsh will also host the European Parliament’s lead negotiator on the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in Ireland this week, in a visit aimed at supporting the next generation of Irish farmers.
German MEP Norbert Lins will join MEP Walsh for a visit to UCD Lyons Farm in Kildare on Thursday, April 9, where they will meet with key stakeholders from across the agricultural sector to discuss generational renewal, young farmers and the long-term sustainability of Irish farming.
MEP Maria Walsh, a full member of the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee, said: “I am delighted to welcome the European Parliament’s lead negotiator on the CAP to Ireland this week. Hosting my EPP colleague MEP Norbert Lins is an important opportunity to bring the realities facing Irish farmers into the heart of EU decision-making. My focus is on ensuring that MEP Lins hears directly from young Irish farmers to inform his work in Brussels.”
