Brendan Kirby will be Guest of Honour at the Westmeath New York GAA Dinner Dance on Saturday.

Castletown Geoghegan man to be honoured by New York GAA

With the New York GAA dinner dance fast approaching, it is fitting to begin the tributes to this year’s honourees by recognising the guest of honour, Brendan Kirby - a man whose journey from Castletown Geoghegan to New York is deeply rooted in family, community and a lifelong commitment to the GAA.

Born and reared in Castletown Geoghegan, Brendan hails from a proud and well-known GAA family steeped in hurling tradition. One of three brothers alongside Ciaran, Philip and the late Peirce, and sister Kathleen Kirby, Brendan’s early years were shaped by the strong values of community, sport and togetherness that define his native parish.

From a young age, Brendan’s talent on the field was evident. He excelled in hurling with Castletown Geoghegan and football with St. Malachy’s, enjoying considerable success at underage level, from school competitions right through to minor.

His ability saw him represent Westmeath at minor level before his emigration, and he later lined out at senior level in both codes with Castletown Geoghegan and St. Malachy’s, underlining his versatility and commitment to Gaelic games.

In 1985, Brendan joined the wave of emigration that saw a number of young men leave Castletown Geoghegan and St. Malachy’s for New York. Like so many of his generation, he embraced the opportunity, building a life through hard work in the construction industry, both in Ireland and in New York — a tradition that continues to this day.

Yet, no matter the distance, the GAA remained central to Brendan’s life. In New York, he continued to immerse himself in the games, playing hurling with Galway and Offaly, and football with Connemara Gaels prior to the formation of the Westmeath club. Across both codes, he made a lasting impact as a player, captain and manager, collecting championship honours along the way and earning the respect of all who lined out with and against him.

Family has always been at the heart of Brendan’s journey. Married to Ann (née Skelton) from the renowned Sarsfields football community of Derrytrasna, County Armagh, they have raised three sons - Colm, Enda and Austin. Brendan took immense pride in watching them follow in his footsteps, progressing through the ranks in New York with Celtics, and he played his part in their development by coaching at all levels, cherishing every moment as they grew into fine young men.

This honour is a reflection not just of Brendan’s achievements on the field, but of a lifetime of dedication to his roots, his family and the wider GAA community, both at home in Westmeath and abroad in New York. In accepting this recognition, Brendan has expressed his sincere gratitude to the Westmeath Hurling and Football Clubs, while also extending congratulations to his fellow nominees and thanks to the many friends he has made through the GAA over the years.

A proud Castletown Geoghegan man, Brendan Kirby’s story is one of tradition, perseverance and enduring connection - a fitting Guest of Honour for the upcoming celebration.
