Official opening of new Saunders Bridge crossing point

The official opening of the Saunders Pedestrian–Cycle Bridge took place today, Tuesday May 5, 2026, with a visit from Transport Minister Darragh O'Brien to perform the official ribbon cutting.

The Minister for Transport and Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment said the completion of the project marked a significant milestone in the ongoing development of safer, more sustainable transport infrastructure in Mullingar.

The Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, Councillor Aoife Davitt told those in attendance that the new bridge will provide a high-quality, fully accessible crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, improving connectivity between key residential areas, schools and amenities.

Funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority’s Active Travel Investment Programme the bridge will enhance safety, reduce reliance on car travel, and create a more connected and inclusive urban environment.
