Private swimming lessons at Mullingar pool still suspended

The process of developing a formal policy governing private swimming lessons at Mullingar Swimming Pool is still ongoing, councillors were told at the May meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad.

The update came in response to a question from Cllr Andrew Duncan regarding plans for swimming lessons at the facility.

Council officials confirmed that all private swimming lessons were suspended from May 1 after unauthorised individuals were found to be providing instruction at the pool.

The local authority said the situation raised “significant concerns” relating to child protection, safeguarding and insurance liability.

As previously reported, the suspension has affected private instructors and families using the facility, with uncertainty remaining over when lessons may resume.

In its latest update, the council said the restriction on private lessons will remain in place while comprehensive regulations and procedures are finalised.

Officials said the new policy will address areas including instructor qualifications, insurance requirements, Garda vetting and compliance with recognised safeguarding standards.

The council said the objective of the new framework is to ensure “the highest possible standards of safety, accountability and protection” for all pool users.
