Bus shelters for Mullingar expected from Q3 this year
New bus shelters are expected to become available for installation in Mullingar from the third quarter of this year, councillors were told at the May meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad.
The update came in response to queries from Cllr Bill Collentine and Cllr Andrew Duncan, who sought details on progress around the installation of bus shelters in the town.
The official written reply from the district stated that the council’s Active Travel Department advised that the shelters will be supplied through a contractor appointed by the National Transport Authority and will become available later this year.
Officials said the timing of installation across the district will depend on the Municipal District’s works programme priorities at the time.
Cllr Collentine also raised concerns over traffic congestion at the SuperValu exit to Austin Friars Street and called for urgent assessment of additional traffic calming measures, including the installation of a yellow box.
The district office confirmed that road markings, including a yellow box, are already in place at the junction of McCurtain Street and Austin Friars Street, but said further measures could be examined.
The councillor additionally called for measures to tackle chewing gum and improve cleanliness in Mullingar town centre. In response, council officials said a programme of deep cleaning, painting and general repair works is currently under way throughout the town as part of broader enhancement and maintenance efforts.
