Man denies headbutting woman and pushing her into locker

A man in his 30s has appeared in court charged with headbutting a woman “numerous times” before forcing her into a locker and striking her with a clothes rail as tried to hide under a duvet.

Roy Garry (39) of Rathowen, Mullingar, Westmeath, appeared before Mullingar District Court charged with assault causing harm at 69 Stonebridge Park, Rochfortbridge, Westmeath on July 13, 2022.

The woman, Mullingar District Court heard, made a statement of complaint to gardaí some eight months later, in which she alleged the accused attacked her following a verbal argument.

Mr Garry, who denies the charge, is alleged to have headbutted the woman “numerous times” before pushing her into a locker.

Judge Bernadette Owens was told the prosecution will allege Mr Garry then grabbed a clothes rail from a wardrobe and struck a cot while an 18-month-old child was present.

The woman, the court heard, went on to pick up the child before seeking refuge under a duvet and where she was “repeatedly struck” with the rail.

Garda Stephen Casey said the woman did not receive medical attention and no report to that effect formed part of the prosecution case.

Defence solicitor Diarmuid Quinn said his client would be seeking a date for hearing to contest the matter.

Judge Owens accepted jurisdiction and Mr Garry was remanded on bail to Mullingar District Court next month when the case is due to be heard.
