Traffic calming projects planned for district include Safe Routes to School in Killucan and Rathwire
A number of traffic calming schemes are planned across the Mullingar Kinnegad district this year, councillors were told at the May meeting of the local authority area committee. In response to a question from Cllr Niall Gaffney, council officials outlined a range of projects either planned, under construction or at design stage for 2026.
Among the schemes listed were Safe Routes to School projects at Columba College in Killucan and St Joseph’s School in Rathwire, along with traffic calming works on the Delvin Road in Mullingar near the Derravaragh housing estate.
Officials also confirmed that a scheme at Taughmon is currently under design.
Additional traffic calming ramps are planned or have been installed at a number of locations including Ginnell Terrace, Castlepollard, Finea, Multyfarnham, Willowbrook, Lakepoint in Mullingar, the Trim Road in Kinnegad and Gleann Petit in Mullingar.
Welcoming the update, Cllr Gaffney said there had already been public engagement on proposed traffic calming measures in Clonmellon and noted that design changes were now being made following feedback received during the non-statutory consultation process.
He said he was eager to learn when the Part 8 planning process for the scheme would proceed.
The Delvin based councillor also referenced planned traffic calming works in the town, and said that two separate Part 8 applications are expected as part of those proposals.
