3500 Westmeath carers to receive €2000 in support

Almost 3500 carers in Westmeath are set to receive the Carer’s Support Grant this week.

This is an annual Grant that is delivered to all carers providing full time care.

147,000 carers will benefit nationwide. And the total payments will reach the region of €336 million.

The grant is paid automatically to people receiving Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, or Domiciliary Care Allowance.

It's also available to other full-time carers who are not receiving any of these payments.

Minister Robert Troy welcomed the announcement saying, “Carers provide an invaluable service in our local communities, supporting older people and people with disabilities with dedication and decency.

“This year's grant will provide meaningful financial support to carers in County Westmeath.”

Minister for Social Protection, Dara Calleary, increased the grant to €2,000 as part of ongoing improvements to support for carers.

The grant is paid in respect of each person being cared for. Over 18,000 carers are providing care for two or more people and will receive a grant for each person they are caring for.

Minister Troy complimented Calleary’s decision to increase the grant.

“The increase to the rant by Minister Calleary is a recognition of the vital role of carers and the contribution they make to society.

“Carers who care for more than one person will receive a grant in respect of each individual, reflecting the additional responsibilities they take on.”

He also highlighted that further improvements to the Carer’s Allowance, including changes to the weekly income disregard will come into effect in July.

These improvements will provide additional support and flexibility for carers who wish to remain connected to the workforce.

Concluding, Minister Troy said, "I want to acknowledge every carer in County Westmeath for their contribution to our local community and thank them for the difference they make every single day."
