Wilson’s Hospital honoured at Irish language event

For their endeavours during Seachtain na Gaeilge in March, three Westmeath schools were awarded a Gaelbhratach (Irish flag) at a ceremony in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. The three were Wilson’s Hospital School, Multyfarnham, and two Athlone Schools, Our Lady’s Bower and Marist College.

Wilson’s Hospital School was also awarded a special prize for Best New Committee for outstanding work in promoting the Gaelbhratach initiative in their school for the first time. This award was revealed as a surprise during the presentation of flags.

Among the activities organised and run by students in the three schools in Westmeath, for which they were awarded the prestigious prize from Gael Linn, were running a Seachtain na Gaeilge radio station and hosting Irish language quizzes.

Delivered by Gael Linn, Gaelbhratach is a national programme designed to encourage students at primary and post-primary level to use Irish beyond the classroom in a natural and enjoyable way.

The initiative continues to grow year on year, and 2026 is so far marking yet another milestone in its continued expansion at post-primary level.
