Chris gets behind Westmeath footballers: 'Over the bar and get under the Breaking Ball'

Chris Loughrey is getting behind the Westmeath senior footballers with his newly released song, Breaking Ball, available to listen to on SoundCloud.

Their success is “the story of the summer so far” said Chris, explaining his thinking when he sat down to pen the lyrics and compose the melody.

“I decided just to write what’s in the air, and that’s what’s in the air at the moment.

"It’s basically about the progression, really, from wintertime. So with Mark McHugh coming in and managing them, it’s a kind of a winter dream, summer reality – that’s what the song is about, how he puts the team on.”

As a performer, Chris works at the weekends and hasn’t been able to get to the matches, but he is a dedicated supporter. “Winning the Leinster was something special. I played in Mullingar that night, at Clarkes, and it was just incredible. The atmosphere was crazy.”

Chris reckons Westmeath have a top rank manager and great footballers too. “Other teams won’t like facing them. I wouldn’t buy in to what some pundits were saying last week, that Galway weren’t bothered – I think Galway were very bothered. It could have been a very different game… the goal just before half time took the sting out of things.

Chris played up to minor level for his home club, St Mary’s, Rochfortbridge, and says the modern game is completely different to what it was in his day, and like the rest of Westmeath, he’s enjoying the current fantastic run and is happy to celebrate it in song.

“Over the bar and get under the breaking ball..." he sings.
