Local garda joins colleagues at Special Olympics Summer Games Opening Ceremony

Garda Graham Flood is “proud to recognise the ongoing involvement of An Garda Síochána in supporting Special Olympics Ireland and promoting inclusion through sport”.

The Westmeath officer was at the Special Olympics Ireland Summer Games Opening Ceremony, where members of An Garda Síochána played a key role in the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Gda Flood described it as “serving as guardians of the Flame of Hope and helping to lead the ceremonial procession”.

“The Torch of Hope was carried alongside colleagues from the Police Service of Northern Ireland, symbolising partnership, unity, and a shared commitment to supporting athletes with intellectual disabilities.

“I was honoured to be asked to present athletes with medals. This is an enjoyable part of my job.”
