Molly-Mae Hague has revealed the surprising inspiration behind her newborn son’s name.

The former Love Island star, 27, welcomed her second child with partner Tommy Fury earlier this month, and recently announced they had chosen to name him Midas.

In a video posted to her YouTube account, Hague has now explained how a 2011 film about boxing robots sparked her inspiration.

“We had this name for a boy for quite a few years. I saw a couple of comments when the name was being rumoured about and how it originates from Greek mythology because there was a King Midas and I believe the story is that everything he touches turns to gold,” she said.

Midas is remembered in Greek mythology for his ability to turn everything he touched into gold, however his ability acts as a cautionary warning against greed after he accidentally turns his daughter into a statue.

However, in her 29-minute video, Hague said her son was “not necessarily named after the Greek king”.

“In the same way Bambi is not necessarily named after the Disney character, Midas is not named after the Greek king. Actually, this is the most random story. I actually found the name from watching a film called Real Steel, which is the most random film.”

“It’s basically like Transformers. It’s got Hugh Jackman in it and it’s a film about robots boxing. One of those robots in the film was called Midas. This was years ago and I heard the name and was like “wow, that’s a really, cool strong name” and I’d never heard of it before. I just thought Midas Fury was such a strong name and then I mentioned it to Tommy and he just absolutely fell in love with it.

“That was always our boy name that we stuck with.”

Real Steel was based on the short story Steel by Richard Matheson, which was originally published in a 1956 edition of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, and later adapted into a 1963 Twilight Zone episode.

It is set in a world where boxing matches are fought by robots and follows a former boxer, played by Jackman, who finds an abandoned robot and trains it to become a promising fighter.

After explaining her son’s name, Hague then shared she was grateful he was healthy and said the family were “so happy” following his arrival.

Earlier this month, Fury revealed the name of their son during a fight against Eddie Hall in Manchester.

Midas was spelt out on the back of his shirt and boxing shorts, with Fury speaking about his son after the victory.

He said: “This was for my new baby boy, Midas. It is another Fury, it’s another boy. I’ve fought a lot of people, and this guy can fight. He’s not slow, he’s fit. Thank you for taking the fight and thank you for a great night in Manchester.”

Hague and Fury met on the fifth series of the ITV dating show in 2019 and ended as runners-up.

They remained together after the show and were engaged until they split up in August 2024 but revealed they were back together in May last year.

They previously welcomed daughter Bambi in 2023.
