New Ciorcal Comhrá starting in Kinnegad this weekend
Catríona Molyneux “decided to organise an Irish language event in the midlands after someone posed a thought provoking question about an Irish revival to me on TikTok, where I post content as Gaeilge”.
Catríona is hosting the first Ciorcal Comhrá this Sunday 5 July (1-2pm) in Evelayn Delicious Treats, Kinnegad.
She told the Westmeath Examiner how it came about - that after the question on TikTok, she posted a response video: “I spoke about how I feel that Irish doesn’t really have a place within Westmeath, particularly the Kinnegad and Mullingar area, and that events should be organised to promote our language. So I thought, ‘why shouldn’t I get the ball rolling?’
“I’ve seen Ciorcal Comhrá events being popular and successful in Belfast, where I study English and Irish in Queens University, and thought that it was a brilliant way to introduce Irish into Kinnegad as more than just a school subject.
“After advertising the event on Facebook, I’ve received great feedback from other people in the town, who seem really interested.”
Catríona’s father, Derek Molyneux, is helping set up the event with information sheets on how to order coffee as Gaeilge, and framed prints of seanfhocail (Irish proverbs) to spark conversation.
“We’re hosting the event in Evelayn Delicious Treats, an accessible location on the Main Street in Kinnegad with parking nearby,” said Catríona.
