MKMD commits to road markings and footpath repairs
The Municipal District of Kinnegad confirmed plans to address several maintenance issues raised by Councillor Michael Dollard at a recent monthly meeting.
The District Office confirmed it will reline road markings at the taxi rank on Oliver Plunkett Street as part of its ongoing maintenance programme. Cllr Dollard had requested the work be carried out “at an early date.”
Beech Grove
Council officials said they will examine timber uprights along the active travel route between Beech Grove and Bellview Heights to determine what repairs are needed. The infrastructure forms part of Mullingar’s pedestrian and cycling network.
Resurfacing
A request to resurface the area behind the OPD (Older Persons Dwellings) units at O’Growney Gardens prompted discussion about whether the work should fall to the roads or housing department.
Cllr Dollard questioned whether housing should be responsible, given the units are designated OPDs.
District Engineer Pat Kavanagh clarified that while the areas are not public roads, they serve as public access points to the rear of the houses. He pointed to similar resurfacing work carried out at O’Growney Drive and Ginnell Terrace as precedent.
The District Office confirmed the O’Growney Gardens resurfacing will be considered as part of future estimates.
Bellview Grove
At the same meeting, Cllr Dollard sought an update on outstanding works at the entrance to the new Bellview Grove housing development on the Delvin Road in Mullingar.
The councillor asked the Municipal District to clarify what works remained to be completed on the footpath serving the new estate.
In response, the Planning Department said a site inspection had been carried out by the Taking-in-Charge officer on May 26.
Officials advised that the developer had indicated that the wearing course of tarmac would be laid no later than the week beginning June 8.
Once completed, the final surface will tie in with the existing manholes and footpaths, creating a wheelchair-friendly route and eliminating trip hazards at the entrance to the development.
The update was welcomed as residents await the completion of the final elements of the scheme’s infrastructure.
