Football success ‘all starts with the clubs’

Joseph Whelan, Jude Auld, Cian Lee, and Ronan and James Greene enjoying the breakfast event.It’s important for county players to return to their clubs following major successes, said Westmeath GAA chairperson Paddy Wallace as he welcomed Westmeath captain Ronan Wallace to a big breakfast event in Multyfarnham GAA on Sunday.
The event is the local community centre brought together club members, families and supporters, and started with a BBQ breakfast and refreshments for all, and continued with a special Q&A with Ronan.
Club chairperson David Kelly said the BBQ breakfast had been organised to mark the Westmeath and Ronan’s Leinster SFC success while also serving as a fundraiser for the club. He said around 40 volunteers had helped organise the event, an over the last few weeks.
“We wanted to bring the community together,” he said. “Ronan is only the second Westmeath captain to win the Leinster title, so it was an opportunity to celebrate that achievement and allow young players to meet him.”
Ronan spoke about his progression from underage football in Multyfarnham to captaining Westmeath to the Leinster Senior Football Championship title.
Young players put their queries to Ronan and Paddy in a Q&A session before photographs and an autograph signing with the Delaney Cup.
David Kelly said the fundraiser would support ongoing investment in club facilities as well as the recent developments of the new all-weather pitch, floodlights and more. “It is expensive to run a club, and we’re continuing to develop our facilities,” he said. “Events like this help us raise funds while bringing people together.”
Paddy Wallace he said it was important for county players to return to their clubs following major successes. “It all starts with the clubs,” he said. “It’s important that players come back to where they began and support the next generation. We also have to acknowledge the work of the management team under Mark McHugh who got use in the position we are.”
He also said Westmeath GAA continued to promote integration across all Gaelic games, highlighting the role of ladies football and camogie. “The ladies had a great run, came up a little bit short in Cavan, but fair play to them, and congratulations to them.”
Multyfarnham GAA club thanked the volunteers, sponsors and supporters, as well as Ronan Wallace and Paddy Wallace, for their contribution to the event. On their Facebook page the club posted: “A sincere thank-you to everyone who helped make the day possible. Whether you gave your time, donated supplies, worked behind the scenes, cooked, served, set up, cleaned up, or simply came along to support the event, every contribution was greatly appreciated.”
