Golf Classic at Murtagh's raises funds for Delvin Hospice Homecare and LARCC

Delvin Hospice Homecare and LARCC in Multyfarnham were the beneficiaries of the annual Golf Classic held at Shay Murtagh's private golf course on Saturday July 11. Competitors played for two cups while raising funds for the two local charities.

The course, built by Shay Murtagh for his friends, neighbours and the local community, was put to excellent use in support of the worthy causes.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner, Shay Murtagh said the event has become a popular fixture on the local calendar. "The event has been running for five years. We started in 2019 but lost out because of Covid," he said.

This year, 140 golfers took part, with play getting under way at 8am and concluding at 4pm. In addition to the competitors, many more people attended throughout the day to enjoy the occasion.

Food and refreshments were provided throughout the day for everyone in attendance. "There are 140 players, but there are many more people who come to enjoy the day," Mr Murtagh added.

Breda McHugh, one of the event organisers and a member of Delvin Hospice Homecare, said the Golf Classic has raised significant funds. "Funds raised over the last four years have been €41,000," she said.

The proceeds support Delvin Hospice Homecare in providing specialist palliative care services, ensuring that people coping with life-limiting illness and end-of-life care can access appropriate care and support in their own homes.

Funds also went towards LARCC, Cancer Support Centre in Multyfarnham, which provides psychological and emotional support to people living with cancer and their families.

Ms McHugh also explained that additional funds would be raised through the event's annual raffle. “All the players receive a complimentary raffle ticket, and we'll sell more tickets as well. Then we have a big raffle night in Delvin with 12 raffle prizes," she said. The raffle night takes place in O’Shaughnessy’s Bar in Delvin on August 2.
