The winning wasn’t the important thing at the match on Friday evening at St Finian’s College – that was the taking part and raising funds for Pieta House.
It’s not the first time the ED staff have played charity sport events, and this year Tahir Shafiq, a doctor there and a member of the cricket club, suggested his sport.
Tahir was captain for the Mullingar hospital team. On the evening, Mullingar Cricket Club scored 100 runs in 15 overs, and Mullingar ED chased down the target with five balls to spare to take the win by four wickets.
Male and female players turned out for both teams, and cups and medals were presented after the match.
There isn’t yet a formal name for the cup, but as Mullingar Cricket Club would like to do more charity fundraising events in the future, they have time to think about that one.
In the meantime, Raj and colleagues, and Richie Geoghegan from the ED, thanked everyone who took part in the match, especially the players and supporters. “Your efforts and donations made a real difference,” added Richie.
The teams set a target of raising €1,000 for Pieta, and that has been surpassed; if you would like to contribute, you can do so on iDonate.
New club grounds
Mullingar Cricket Club are also working on raising funds for a new home ground at Cullion.
Their campaign includes a Buy a Brick initiative (each brick costs €1,000 and can be purchased individually or as a group of friends, teammates, or family; and a brick, with text will be incorporated in the construction of the new grounds).
