Three of 10 new cars sold in Westmeath so far this year are electric

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of electric cars registered in Westmeath during the course of 2026, figures provided by SIMI (the Society of the Irish Motor Industry), reveal.

Three in every 10 cars registered in the county are now electric. The total number of new cars registered in Westmeath in the first seven months of this year came to 1,642 – and of those, 490 were electric, (29.8 per cent).

In the corresponding period in 2025, there were 1,532 new vehicle registrations, of which 257 (16.8 per cent) were electric.

The rise in electric vehicle sales comes to 90.66 per cent.

The county accounted for 1.6% of all new electric vehicle registrations nationally during the period, a slight increase on its 1.34% share in the first half of 2025.

Nationally, new car registrations were broadly stable during the opening half of the year, although electric vehicle sales continued their strong recovery after a difficult 2025.

Several counties recorded dramatic increases in EV uptake, reflecting growing consumer confidence, an expanding choice of models and continued investment in charging infrastructure, say the SIMI.

The figures suggest that while the overall pace of new car purchases in Westmeath remains steady, more buyers are opting to make the switch to fully electric vehicles.
