Photos by Jay G FordeThe proceeds from this year’s Charity Golf Classic at Shay Murtagh’s private golf course in Raharney were presented to the beneficiaries, Delvin Hospice Homecare and LARCC, at a function in Raharney last week.
Breda McHugh, one of the organisers and a member of Delvin Hospice Homecare, thanked all who had helped make the event so successful, in particular Shay and Kathleen Murtagh for hosting, and “our own Ned Fox and his team who had the course in immaculate condition”.
She said there was no doubt that everyone enjoyed the day, judging by the “unreal” amount of phone calls she received afterwards.
Breda thanked the GUI handicap and non-golfers, 130 in all, who took part. She thanked the starters and ball spotters, Daniel and David McHugh, David Smyth Catering for the delicious food and the Delvin Hospice ladies who “looked after everybody”, the ladies checking in the golfers – “they must have had a pain in their hands, there were so many names” – the sponsors, everyone who bought or sold raffle tickets, and “everyone who helped and contributed to such a successful and fun day”.
Bernie McHugh from the LARCC thanked Breda for her work in organising this event saying she was “a huge link and confidante every year”, Shay and Kathleen Murtagh for hosting, and everyone who took part and donated.
Bernie outlined the services provided at LARCC in supporting those dealing with a cancer diagnosis and their families. She spoke of their “lovely pamper days” and “residential retreats” to which they welcome people from across the country.
Bernie is 16 years with the charity and during that time she has seen the number of volunteers and staff grow to 20. It used to cost in the region of €200,000 a year to run the service; it now costs €500,000, she reported. The centre welcomes about 275 to 300 new people to the service each year.
“Without money like this we just couldn’t keep the doors open and keep growing as we are,” Bernie said. She paid tribute to Trish McGrath, who “wears two hats” as she is involved with LARCC and Delvin Hospice Homecare, saying that without people like Trish and the other members of staff, who are passionate about what they do, the centre could not operate. “From the bottom of my heart, on my behalf and on behalf of the directors and staff, thank you very much,” Bernie concluded.
Barney Ivory from Delvin Hospice Homecare thanked Shay and Kathleen Murtagh for a “smashing day” and all who helped make it a success. He said the raffle “really did the business this year”, boosting the funds raised.
Barney looked forward to news next year of progress on the new midland hospice centre planned for Tullamore.
Shay Murtagh thanked all who helped organise the event, particularly Breda McHugh, and all who supported it.
