One day in the year when that is possible is National Services Day, also known and Blue Light Day.
It was on Saturday last, September 5, and the local emergency services were present in Mullingar Town Park to welcome the public, explain what they do, and to demonstrate their equipment.
The flashing blue lights and shrieking sirens were an attraction for the younger visitors, and the emergency crews present were delighted to let kids climb up into the cabs to have a go.
National Services Day is organised by a volunteer board, committee and regional representatives, and is a focal point for the frontline services to acknowledge their appreciation to the public.
