Albert Boyhan from Crookedwood with his Del Boy CarCrookedwood GAA celebrated 120 years of hurling at a special anniversary event held at Crookedwood GAA on Sunday, September 13.
The celebrations, which began at 1pm and ended just after 5pm, brought together members of the local community to mark the club’s long history, while also looking towards its future.
The day included a family fun day with a number of hurling and camogie blitzes for under-8 and under-10 teams. Young players from Crookedwood, Ringtown and neighbouring clubs took part, while there was also face painting, games, inflatables, a barbecue and refreshments throughout the afternoon.
Medal presentations were held for the under-8 and under-10 teams following the blitzes.
One of the organisers, Majella Boyhan, said the event was a celebration of all generations involved with the club.
“We have a mixture of underage blitzes, and with our neighbouring partner Ringtown, which is an amalgamation of St Vincent's, Ringtown and Crookedwood. We also have our camogie girls playing” she said.
Majella Boyhan explained that a planning group had been established to organise the anniversary celebrations.
“We put together a planning group about three months ago just to organise the day. Today is about celebrating the past, the present and the future,” she said.
Music was also part of the celebrations, with Clann Lir CCÉ and the Dunleavy sisters performing on the stage at the GAA pitch.
A major part of the afternoon was dedicated to remembering two of Crookedwood’s historic Junior Hurling Championship-winning teams, from 1956 and 1986.
The 1956 team secured Crookedwood’s first Junior Championship title, marking a significant moment in the club’s history. Seventy years on, the achievement was remembered as an important part of the club’s legacy.
The winning team consisted of Jimmy Dermody, Louis Cahill, Eddie Clinton, Billy Bell, Frank McCarthy, Ray Daly, Michael Murtagh, Anthony Gaffney, Frank Leavy, Richie Duffy, Fergus McCormack (RIP), Jimmy Ward, William Reilly, Mattie Coffey, Raddy Redmond (RIP) and Noel Bardon (RIP).
Special presentations were made to members of the 1956 and 1986 team, with commemorative mugs, photographs and engraved crystal presented during the afternoon.
The 1986 Junior Championship-winning team was also honoured. The victory in 1986 had ended a 30-year wait for silverware and remains one of the most memorable achievements in Crookedwood’s history.
The 1986 team consisted of Paul Quinn, Matt Purcell, Frank Brennan, Joe Savage, Aidan Bardon, Donal McCarthy (RIP), Willie Gibson, Tommy Kelly, Oliver McCarthy, James Savage, Sean Doolin, Adrian Murray (RIP), Val Brennan, Sean Collins and Frank Gibson.
The club also welcomed the 2026 Rose of Tralee, Caoilfhinn Ní Choiligh, who attended the celebrations and met members of the public. She was presented with a specially designed hurl and a piece of artwork from Devine Art Studios.
A raffle featuring 50 prizes was also held as part of the anniversary celebrations, with the draw taking place on Monday, September 14.
The 120th anniversary provided an opportunity for Crookedwood GAA to celebrate its past achievements while highlighting the involvement of young players and families in the club.
