Corey Monaghan and Noah Monaghan (survivor) on Saturday.Tyrrellspass GAA Club was filled with colour, music, emotion and community spirit on Saturday, September 19, as Relay for Life Westmeath brought people from across the county together for a memorable 24-hour celebration of hope, remembrance and solidarity.
Organised in aid of the Irish Cancer Society, the event saw relay teams take to the track throughout the day and night, ensuring that the walk continued around the clock. What began with months of preparation and fundraising came to life in Tyrrellspass as families, friends, volunteers and supporters gathered for a shared cause.
A particularly moving moment was the Survivors Lap, which officially opened the relay. Cancer survivors led the participating teams around the track, providing a powerful and uplifting reminder of the courage and strength of those who have faced the disease.
The programme offered something for everyone, with music, food, entertainment and activities helping to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the day. The presence of special guests, including 2026 Rose of Tralee Caoilfhinn Ní Choiligh, added to the occasion.
As darkness fell, the Candle of Hope ceremony provided one of the evening's most poignant moments. Personalised candle bags illuminated the track in memory of loved ones lost to cancer and in support of those continuing their fight.
Behind the scenes, a huge team of volunteers, local businesses, community organisations and supporters helped make the event possible, while participating teams deserve particular praise for their fundraising and commitment to keeping the relay moving through the night.
Relay for Life Westmeath proved that, when a community comes together, it can create something truly meaningful — remembering those lost, celebrating survivors and raising vital funds for the Irish Cancer Society.
