Two Westmeath schools selected for Safe Routes Programme – Troy

Fianna Fáil Minister Robert Troy has welcomed confirmation that two schools in Westmeath are among 83 nationwide that have been selected for inclusion in round five of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programme.

The two are Gaelscoil An Choillín and An Grianán National School in Moate.

The initiative is designed to transform the school run by installing safety infrastructure such as school zone pencil-shaped bollards, colourful road markings, upgraded footpaths, and enhanced pedestrian crossings to slow traffic and prioritise student safety.

Minister Troy said: “I am delighted to see two local schools being brought into this important programme. This investment will provide the safety measures necessary to make walking, wheeling, and cycling a realistic and safe choice for our students and their families.”

This latest expansion raises the total number of participating schools across the country to 609, making journeys to school safer, more attractive and more accessible for children across Ireland.

Surveys collected from participating schools show cycling to school has increased by almost 49 percent, walking has increased by eight percent, and car use has fallen by more than 10 percent. Scooting has increased by 17 percent, and public transport use has increased by almost 16 percent.

Minister Troy added: “By creating a safer environment at the school gate, we are keeping our children safe, and we are also encouraging lifelong habits of physical activity and helping to reduce congestion in towns and villages.

“Thanks to the school communities, parents, and Westmeath County Council for their engagement with the NTA and An Taisce to bring these projects to fruition, ensuring that local students of all abilities have access to safe, sustainable transport to and from school.”

More than €50 million was invested in Safe Routes to School between 2021 and 2025, and an additional €24 million was allocated in 2026; there are ongoing funding commitments supporting the expansion of the Programme to additional schools.
