Westmeath community groups invited to apply for water quality funding

Community groups and non-governmental organisations in Westmeath working to protect local rivers, lakes and waterways are being encouraged to apply for a new round of funding under the Catchment Support Fund 2027.

The fund, launched by the River Basin Management Service on October 12, provides financial assistance towards organisational running costs and capacity building for groups delivering community-based water quality projects.

Funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the scheme aims to strengthen local organisations and support practical action to improve water quality.

In 2026, more than €1.1 million was awarded to 56 groups across 20 counties, alongside two national projects. This represented an increase on the €856,260 distributed to 40 groups across 19 counties in 2025.

Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity Christopher O’Sullivan TD encouraged local organisations to apply, highlighting the important role communities play in protecting rivers, lakes and coastal waters and supporting Ireland’s Water Action Plan.

The fund offers two streams of support. Stream One helps cover essential organisational expenses, including insurance, accountancy and legal fees, website costs, promotional materials and group development activities.

Stream Two is aimed at organisations with company limited by guarantee status, or an equivalent structure, and a proven track record with the River Basin Management Service. It can provide funding towards staff costs, rent and rates.

Anthony Coleman, director of services at the River Basin Management Service, said community groups would be particularly important as preparations intensify for the Fourth Cycle River Basin Management Plan in 2027.

Applications must be submitted by 11.30pm on November 16, 2026, through the River Basin Management Service’s online portal at https://consult.riverbasin.ie/en/content/rbms-catchment-support-fund-2027.

Interested groups are advised to contact their local Community Water Officer or River Basin Management Service representative for further information.
