LARCC "Gives it some Wellie"
One of Meath's most famous sons, the Duke of Wellington, will be foremost in the minds of staff and volunteers from Lakelands Area Retreat and Cancer Care (LARCC) at the forthcoming National Country Fair.Taking place in Ballinlough Castle, on the Bank Holiday weekend, LARCC will be hosting the Midlands Wellie Boot Throwing Championship. While the weather has been such, most have been wearing their wellies at Ballinlough Castle the emphasis will be on the throwing of them with competitions for the men, ladies and childrenThe Wellie Throwing Distance Champion is a much sought after accolade and the recent monsoon conditions will probably be great motivation for people to really lash those plastic footwear as far from them as possible.LARCC's Marketing Manager, Bernie McHugh, said that it was fitting the "Iron Duke" Wellington was originally from just down the road in Trim, and the fun event at Ballinlough Castle is a fitting if not light-hearted commemoration. "When LARCC approached the organisers of the National Country Fair to organise a charity weekend for LARCC at the show we really were not sure what form our competition should take. After a brainstorming session we came upon the idea of the Midland Wellie Throwing Championship with competitions each day for men, ladies and of course, for children. It fits in with the ethos of a country fair where green wellies are probably the most popular foot attire of the weekend" Ms McHugh told the Westmeath Examiner.More than ten thousand people are expected at the two-day National Country Fair, which is considered a showcase event. With over 150 trade stalls offering a wide variety of country sports equipment and clothing, the fair will also host an air display, birds of prey, Cossack horsemanship, clay pigeon shooting, archery, a food festival and crafts fair, vintage tractors, children's entertainment and an action packed main arena with international class displays.
