Students at Gainstown National School held a mini fleadh on the school grounds last Friday, March 14. The event was put together by the students and their teachers to celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge and the run-up to St Patrick’s Day.
The proceedings included ballet groups, Irish dancers, tin whistle groups and people singing, and one student dressed up as Pádraic Pearse to read out the Proclamation of Independence.
The school grounds were laid out as a fleadh village. Mick Foster and Moyra Fraser dropped in to visit the sixth class pupils, and told them about working as a musician, and life in general.
Teacher Karen McCormack, who takes tin whistle classes, helped prepare all of the children for the day.
Her colleague, Olive Hickey, said the day brought “a real feel-good factor and lifted spirits for St Patrick’s Day”.
