Westmeath students are Maynooth University Entrance Scholars

The significant Leaving Certificate achievements of five former Westmeath school students have been acknowledged and celebrated by Maynooth University.

The now first year Maynooth University students are among more than 70 MU Entrance Scholars, each having achieved 575 points or more in their Leaving Certificate.

Grace O’Neill, formerly of Loreto College, Mullingar, is studying a Bachelors in Education, Edward Reid, formerly of St Finian’s College, Mullingar, is studying Physics with Astrophysics, and Vaughan Sheahan, formerly of Wilson’s Hospital School in Multyfarnham, is studying a BSc Computational thinking degree.

Other Westmeath scholars are Moate Community School alumna Abbie Coolahan, and Our Lady’s Bower Secondary School, Athlone, alumna Sarah McNamara who are students of the Bachelor of Education – Froebel Primary Teaching degree.

The €1,000 entrance scholarship is awarded to incoming first year students, via the CAO, who have obtained 575 points or more in the Leaving Certificate.

President of Maynooth University, Prof Eeva Leinonen, presented the scholars with crystal, in recognition of their achievements during the awards ceremony held on the campus.

School representatives were presented with plaque, and family members were treated to an evening of music and refreshments. Speaking about the event, assistant registrar and director of admissions, Ita McGuigan said: “We are delighted to celebrate with the scholarship recipients, their family and schools, their outstanding achievement in the Leaving Certificate. We had more than 70 scholars from more than 60 schools from all over Ireland in attendance, who chose to study at Maynooth University.”
