St Oliver Plunkett's embrace GAA One Club initiative
U19, U20 and Senior 'B' hurlers honoured
St Oliver Plunkett's Mullingar gathered in the Greville Arms Hotel last Friday night to celebrate the launch of their new one club, the integration of the hurling and camogie clubs. The now coordinated and shared approach to hurling and camogie will see a robust and clearly defined structure in the running of the club, with one overall club committee with representation from both previous hurling and camogie committees.
Liam Dalton, club chairperson, welcomed all club members, players and parents and thanked everyone who had worked hard in the club to establish a new one club model which will establish a solid foundation for the future of hurling and camogie in Mullingar.
Therese Lucas, camogie chairperson welcomed the change and said she looked forward to the years ahead thanking each of the girls for their continuous effort and commitment to St Oliver Plunkett’s camogie. Therese paid a warm tribute to previous camogie committee members and volunteers for all of their hard work and commitment over many years.
Another reason for celebration on the night was the presentation of medals to the U20 squad who won the Westmeath U20 Division 1 Championship in 2024. The team put on a great display of hurling in their final and battled hard to earn a two-point victory over a very strong Na Piarsaigh team in Raharney. Liam Dalton said, “The team progressed and got stronger through the year; the victory in the final was tremendous for the club." He thanked the team and the management for an outstanding effort, building on their U19 Division 2 success in 2023, and looked forward to the years ahead.
Also honoured on the night was the senior team which won the Westmeath Senior 'B' championship in 2023. The club was delighted to have Darren McCormack, former Westmeath and Castlepollard hurler, present on the night to present medals to both panels.
Eddie Casey, underage chairperson thanked Darren for taking time to be with the club and spoke with Darren about his own hurling career. Darren shared his own insights to being a county hurler and what it means to wear the jersey for your club and county. With a son and daughter both playing hurling and camogie, and as a coach in both codes, Darren spoke about the benefits of a one club model.
A special presentation was made by Liam Dalton and senior captain Davy Gavin to senior players Greg Gavin and Steven McManus for their long standing careers, commitment and valuable contribution to St Oliver Plunkett's. Liam Dalton said they were an “inspiration to all players through every age grade and have been fantastic for the club.” He thanked them both on behalf of all players and club members. The night was rounded off with entertainment from local band Sugar Ray and DJ Anthony.
