Kilbeggan suspect devices "of a historical nature"

Gardaí have confirmed that the devices that caused road closures in the Kilbeggan area yesterday were "of a historical nature".

Gardaí were alerted following the discovery of suspect devices at a residence in Kilbeggan, Westmeath yesterday afternoon, Friday, May 2, 2025.

A cordon was established and the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended the scene.

A statement from the Garda Press Office outlined the actions taken: “The EOD team examined the suspect devices and carried out a controlled explosion. The cordon has since been lifted. Investigations are ongoing.”

The devices were of a historical nature and two were deemed viable.
