Step up for a cause: JFK 50 Mile Challenge is on June 7

The JFK 50 Mile Challenge is more than a walk, say the organisers, and many of those who have done it would agree.

It is a test of resilience, perseverance, and inner strength, as participants walk, jog, or run 50 miles in a day – not for medals or trophies, but to raise awareness and funds for local causes that change lives.

Every year, there are scores of first time walkers and many seasoned athletes among the hundreds of people who sign up for their own reasons – to honour loved ones, to overcome personal challenges, or just to be part of something bigger than themselves.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated committee of organisers work year-round to ensure every detail is perfect.

Their efforts range from coordinating food and water stops to managing people safety and securing road permits, and working with them are an army of volunteers who donate time, energy and smiles. Whether they’re on duty at water stations, transporting participants back to their cars, or cleaning up the next day, those people are the lifeblood of the event.

Whether you’re walking two miles, five miles, 10 miles or all 50 (there is no requirement to do the full 50 miles), volunteering at a food stop or making a donation, you are part of a story of grit, generosity, and genuine human connection.

The organisers point out that people can walk whatever they feel comfortable with, and that a lot of those who might be thinking about the event do not realise that wherever they stop, one of the many volunteers will drive them back to your car “so please consider this – we would never make you walk back!”.

There is no need to carry water or food as it is provided all along the route. Toilet facilities provided by Rego hire are placed at regular intervals all along the route.

Last year more than 800 people from all over Ireland started the walk and 226 people completed the full 50 miles. A total of €163,000 was raised in total for the Irish Cancer Society, LARCC and Palliative Care (Cavan).

The JFK 50 Mile Challenge is now in its 14th year, so on Saturday June 7 next, lace up your shoes, and take part in something unforgettable.

The event would be possible without the efforts of the committee and the community spirit of the people Moylagh and the other communities along the route, which was recognised by an feature on Nationwide on RTÉ in March (see it on RTÉ Player).

All participants are asked to contribute or raise a minimum of €50, “and be assured all of that money goes directly to the three charities”.

“People walk for many reasons; some walk to heal; others to inspire; some walk in silence, carrying memories. Others laugh and sing their way through every mile. But all of them walk for hope. And in a time when hope is needed more than ever, the JFK 50 Mile Challenge is a reminder of what unity and shared purpose can achieve.”
