Coralstown mums lace up boots for charity

Saturday evening last, October 17 saw a football match with a difference take place in Kinnegad's resplendent GAA grounds, as Coralstown Ladies' Football Club played Dublin opposition for the benefit of a worthwhile cause. The match, which saw Coralstown's over 30's panel take on Clondalkin-based Round Towers "Gaelic4Mothers" side, took place for three reasons. The first, to raise money to aid Breast Cancer Research; the second, to celebrate a quarter of a century of ladies' football in Coralstown, and the third, to gauge interest in setting up a "Gaelic4Mothers" club in the Coralstown/Kinnegad area.Attracting plenty of support from football fans in the locality, the event raised a sizeable sum for the fight against breast cancer. The match, refereed by Coralstown/Kinnegad and Westmeath legend John Cooney, ended with a one-point win for the home side. The Coralstown ladies were managed by Dermot Cooney and Eamon Gorman. The game, which was followed by refreshments at the Kinnegad GAA Pavilion, is yet another high point in the short history of Coralstown Ladies' GAA.The Westmeath senior ladies' football of champions of 1988 almost repeated the feat this year, but they were pipped at the post by Garrycastle in the final. With the senior team excelling, and the Under 14 and 16 teams winning their respective championships, the club's 25th anniversary is marked during one of its most exciting eras since 1984.
