Rotary Club Mullingar Young Writer Competition
Clean water was on the minds of those present at Mullingar Library when the Rotary Club presented the winners of the annual Young Writer Competition with their prizes on Wednesday week last, May 8.
The theme of this year’s competition was clean water, as Rotary International aim to provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene education to communities across the world.
Pupils from five local schools took part, and they put forward their own winners of best in school awards.
Best in school winners for the junior section were: Rupert Sloane of All Saints NS, Skylar Rowley of Educate Together NS, Fionn Carr of St Colmcille’s NS, and Mia Gibson of St Kenny NS.
For the Intermediate Section, the best in school winners were: Erica Duggan of All Saints NS, and Mina Sheridan of St Kenny NS.
Overall results for the Junior section were: Lisa Smyth, St Colman’s NS, who came first, Ellen Murphy of St Colman’s NS, second and Holly Kennedy of Presentation Junior School in third.
Overall results for the intermediate section were: Carl Keane of St Colmcille’s NS, first, Aoife Walters of St Colman’s NS, second, and Charlie Quigley of St Colman’s NS, third.
President of Mullingar Rotary Club, Dónal Lawlor, said: “We are so happy with the participation from local schools, without them, none of this could happen.
“The standard is increasing every year, the winner in each section was outstanding, and they are acting as a great inspiration for others.
“This is our third year running, and I think people are becoming more aware that the competition is happening, which is great.
“There are another six or so schools that don’t compete, we would love them to come on board and help the competition to grow more, and I hope that people can continue to buy into it.”
