Conditions set for Crookedwood plan

Crookedwood GAA have permission to progress with a substantial development of the club following a local authority planning decision.

Last May Westmeath County Council granted permission to the Crookedwood GAA Club to construct a new pitch, training pitch and astro-turf pitch with a hurling wall and spectator stand among other works after their planning application was approved by Westmeath County Council.

There were a total of 11 submissions by private individuals on the files, one of which was from an architect on behalf of the local parish priest in respect of the site at Parsonstown, Mullingar, Westmeath.

The residents expressed concern regarding road safety and traffic management, the effect on the local water supply, the ecological impact on the area, light and noise pollution, the potential negative impact on the valuation of existing properties, loss of privacy and the lack of clarity in the planning documents.

The application was submitted on May 31, 2024, and the local authority granted conditional approval of the plans, subject to 13 conditions, on May 27, 2025.

Other features of the development are a part two-storey, part single-storey sports hall, with ground floor consisting of a basketball and badminton court, toilets, meeting room, kitchen and team changing rooms and shower facilities and first floor consisting of a gym and viewing gallery.

The site will have a spectator stand, a public walking track, including low level lighting, a maintenance depot for storage of equipment and machinery, a 11-=bay car park, including four disabled spaces and bus drop off zones.

The conditions attached to the planning permission focus on environmental and archaeology considerations, road and traffic safety measures and the provision of a Construction Environmental Management Plan. Other focuses of the conditions include water and wastewater management and landscaping.
