Réaltaí mural celebrates icons from world of arts
Mullingar Arts Centre officially unveiled Réaltaí, a striking new mural by local artist Neil Selby, on Friday, July 4, at 7pm. In this stunning artwork Neil pays tribute to some of Ireland’s most iconic figures from the worlds of theatre, film, music, and television.
The piece is located on a wall in the Arts Centre’s bar area. Réaltaí (meaning Stars) has already drawn admiration from those lucky enough to catch a glimpse during its creation.
Designed and brought to life by Neil, who is a part of the Mullingar Arts Centre family for many years, the mural is both a celebration of national pride and artistic excellence.
Featured in the artwork are a host of celebrated Irish personalities, including Mullingar’s own Joe Dolan, Niall Horan, Niamh Algar, and Bressie, alongside luminaries such as Pierce Brosnan, Phil Lynott, Sinead O’Connor, Brenda Fricker, and Brendan O’Carroll, and Friday's grand reveal them all, some surprises are best experienced in person!
“Those who have had a sneak preview are in awe of Neil’s talent,” says Sean Lynch, Director of the Mullingar Arts Centre, “We are inviting people to join us as we raise a glass to Ireland’s cultural icons, artistic talent, and community spirit.”
The idea for the mural was the brainchild of Neil himself, following discussions with Sean and the Arts Centre’s Board of Directors, the go ahead was given.
Neil is a long-time contributor to the Centre’s creative output, especially its beloved pantomimes, his work is known for its energy, detail, and unmistakable charm.
“I’m a devotee of all things art-related,” says Neil, “I’m currently a freelance artist in a ‘Have pencil, will travel’ kind of way. In other words, I’ll try my hand at any creative medium to bring a vision to life.”
The unveiling event was a festive affair with a wine reception, light refreshments, and perhaps a few famous faces in attendance. Mullingar Arts Centre are especially honoured to welcome Maura McGrath, Chairperson of the Arts Council of Ireland.
Maura recently attended an in-house production of Rhode National School's Braveheart, she spoke in high regard of the Centre and it’s work with young people through programmes such as the Musicals in Schools project. Mullingar Arts Centre are delighted that she will pull the cord for the unveiling ceremony.
